Mini Lesson
During the mini lesson, students come to the carpet and I teach a 10-15 minute lesson on the reading skill/strategy of the week. This may be a previously taught lesson or something new. I model the strategy/skill for them and they try it out with their partner by turning and talking.
Active Engagement
After the mini lesson, students practice the skill/strategy using the Daily 5. Students choose the order in which they accomplish each of the 5 centers. Our centers include reading alone, reading with their partner, listening to their partner, writing about reading, and word study. While the students are rotating through the centers, I meet with strategy groups to review a skill/strategy that they need help with.
Reflection
At the end of Reading Workshop, students volunteer to sit in the author's chair to reflect on their experience. They may confirm their predictions, tell what strategy worked for them, or how they used the skill/strategy that was taught. Students also have the opportunity to clarify any misunderstandings, ask questions, or validate their responses using their text as evidence.
